A Grand Forks man who was hospitalized after a fire at the polka dot painted house on University Avenue has died.
40-year-old John Rodney Dillon Davis was at Regions Medical Center in St. Paul in critical condition after the fire nearly two weeks ago. He died as a result of those injuries. The fire department says the blaze was accidental, caused by the improper use of smoking materials.

The Red Cross is temporarily providing assistance to the displaced residents. The owner says it will take at least a few months for the house to be fully repaired. Firefighters remind everyone to check smoke detectors at least once a month.

Ninety percent of these patients die within the first four months of onset.
