The US’s biggest export to China for the last 5 years has been trash!
This might sound strange, but one of the big destinations of the recycling you take out every week don’t all go to a magic recycling plant that turns them into something else. A good chunk of it is actually exported to China.
The industry is actually in crisis, despite the fact that the market for recyclables to China has doubled since 2006. This is because China has recently passed a ban on the importation of certain types of solid waste, including unwashed plastics.
The big problem seems to be in the trash sorting. Because it’s so labor intensive, the US hasn't developed good processes for sorting through trash. The Chinese are cracking down on dangerous stuff being in the piles of trash. For example, a single syringe can get an entire shipment rejected as medical waste.

by ndmuscleAn assault suspect is on his way back to Florida, after posting $3,500 cash bail this week in Pennington County ..
22 year old Tevan Gant – of Fort Meyers, Florida – left the state accompanied by his attorney after posting bail and signing a waiver of Extradition in a hearing Monday before District Judge Tamara Yon.
Gant is charged with 3 felony counts in connection with an altercation in 2011 that ended the career of Thief River Falls Police Sgt. Mike Puetz.
Terms of release were set just last week after a Rule 20 Psychological Evaluation showed Gant was not competent to participate in his own defense. Assistant County Attorney, Kristen Hansen, last week demanded a second evaluation and argued for a much higher bond and this week requested Gant not be allowed to leave the state until the second evaluation was complete.
Judge Yon accepted the Waiver of Extradition, gave Gant’s Florida based attorney 30 days to arrange for the evaluation and set a status review hearing June 10th. Although he will be allowed to leave the state, Judge Yon told Gant and his attorney he must next appear in person, in Pennington County, at a Pre-Trial Hearing July 22nd.
Gant has not yet entered a plea in the case. If the second evaluation also shows lack of competency, charges against Gant could be deferred in lieu of treatment, or until such time as he is determined competent to stand trial.

31 year old Dustin Helm entered the not guilty plea in an appearance Tuesday before District Judge Tamara Yon in Marshall County District Court in Warren.
The Marshall County Attorney’s Office has charged Helm with 8 felony counts of Theft and Theft by swindle, accused of charging gas for his personal use to a District #441 Credit Card from July of 2011 until the school district received a call from an employee at the Newfolden Co-op, as Helm allegedly filled up last month. The card – generally posted on the Bulletin Board in the School District Bus Garage – came up missing when school officials began searching for it last month. Investigators say it was eventually found, on the kitchen counter in the Helm Home.
According to investigators with the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department, the total amount charged comes to 26 thousand 3 hundred 94 dollars and 43 cents.
Judge Yon set a Pre-Trial Hearing for June 11th and released Helm on his personal promise to appear.
