Lionel Kenneth Johnson, the son of the late Henry A. and Betsy (Twistol) Johnson, of Pelan Township, Kittson Co., was born on May 22, 1929. He attended school in Karlstad and was confirmed at the First Lutheran Church. At age 18, he traveled to Montana and worked on the cattle ranches. He loved the Rocky Mountains. Two years later, he returned to Minnesota and worked at the Kiene Farms of Kennedy. On November 22, 1950, Lionel married Arbutus Ross of Middle River. They lived in Thief River Falls where he worked at Tunberg Motors. In the late 50’s, he had two trucks and hauled gravel and grain, as well as worked in construction. The family moved to Karlstad in 1967 and he worked for Detroiter Mobile Homes of Red Lake Falls, delivering mobile homes to area states and Canada. In 1980, he started North Star Auto Sales in Karlstad and in 1987 he and son, Danny, purchased the Dean Dahlin property in Karlstad. He semi-retired in 1995, continuing to work part time with Danny at North Star Auto. Lionel was a member of the Gospel Tabernacle Church in Karlstad, where at one time he was an usher. He was devoted to his wife and family who always came first in his life. Lionel passed away on Sun. evening, June 18, 2017, at the Karlstad Healthcare Center in Karlstad at the age of 88 years and 26 days.
He is survived by his wife, Arbutus (“Boots”); three daughters: Jeanne (Jim) Snyder, of Grand Junction, CO, Lonnette (Ron) Whitchurch, of Clearwater, FL and Patty (Mike) Clifton, of Seattle, WA; his son: Danny (Becky) of Karlstad; as well as 7 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren.
Lionel was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers: Elmer, Bert, Henry, Benny and Lloyd; and four sisters: Rose, Helen, Betty and Joan.
Visitation will be held from 6 P.M. to 8 P.M. Wed. with a 7 P.M. prayer service at out Karlstad chapel. Burial will be in the Karlstad Cemetery.
