Stay out of the river…
That was the notice from the Parks and Recreation Department today in Thief River Falls.
The note came from Parks Forman Mike Olson who said that for health reasons they would be closing the beach.
We spoke with Park and Rec Administrative Assistant Ashley Hejlik who said an abundance of algae, and excessive goose waste, along with a lack of current has created a stagnant water situation which may be unsafe for swimmers.
Ashley Hejlik said signs will be posted advising people to stay out of the river and that river water is being tested by officials from the Watershed District.
As of two PM today, no signs had been posted and people continued to swim at Bill LaFave Park.
At this time, the Park and Rec is not sure how long the beach will be closed.
