A Thief River Falls man was injured last night when the pickup he was driving collided with a train in Smilie Township.
According to the Pennington County Sheriff’s Department, Mclain Stennes, 20, suffered an arm injury after his 2010 Ford Pickup struck the train engine at a crossing on 130th Street Northeast.
Stennes was taken to Sanford Regional Medical Center in Thief River Falls with injuries Sheriff Ray Kuznia described as “minor.”
Deputies say Stennes was east bound and saw the train, but could not stop in time, impacting the North Bound Engine. Stennes was issued a citation for failure to stop at a stop sign.
Officers were assisted at the scene by Thief River Falls Fire Fighters and Police and the Minnesota State Patrol.
Deputies say Stennes was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident, reported just before 5:30 last night. Investigators say there is no evidence of distracted driving, but say speed may have been a factor in the accident.
The train engineer, Chad Pesch of Thief River Falls, escaped injury.
